Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed “Gods own county”. in general recognition for having the largest number of great people and great things in Britain. Some even go so far as to say Yorkshire is – Gods own country, but that is perhaps stretching the imagination a bit far. Without doubt though the landscape, especially in the Dales of North Yorkshire is as grand and becoming as anywhere.

So where better for your special wedding day?

The Wharfedale valley, especially the stretch from Burnsall down to Bolton Abbey is quite simply stunning, no matter the time of year. The dramatic mix or low grazing land, woods of different tree species and the upland hills of Barden Fell and Barden Moor on either side of the valley make for a tremendous backdrop. Then there is the River Wharfe, a true Dales watercourse with such a variety of moods, from shallow trout runs, to dangerous deep pools and the waterfall stretch at the famous Strid Wood. No visit is complete without walking at least part of this stretch.

Most of this area is controlled by the Bolton Abbey estate, part of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s Chatsworth estate. It is well maintained and a focal point for many to experience the great outdoors. They are also responsible for two pieces of outstanding architecture, the Priory at Bolton Abbey and Barden Tower, both of which are steeped in history and nostalgia.

It is no surprise then, that this area has become extremely popular as a tourist destination as well as a mecca for weddings with an array of venues offering a range of possibilities. The Bolton Abbey Priory offers a fabulous and grand church wedding, the two Devonshire properties, the Arms and Fell both cater for hotel weddings and you can also marry at a traditional inn, a country house and a café!

Lest we forget there is also The Priests House in the shadow of Barden Tower, a really fabulous wedding venue offering a total mix of ceremony and reception opportunities, from very small occasions to marquee functions of 100 people. The adjacent Barden Bunk Barn can also be used for evening receptions and as guest accommodation.

There is no doubt that Bolton Abbey and the surrounding area is a great place to wed.

So why North Yorkshire and especially the Yorkshire Dales?

Some great walking...

And plenty to do....
